Einstök Ölgerd [Brewery] – Icelandic White Ale 5.2%
This is a lemon coloured ale with a fresh and sweet aroma. It has a sweet light spicy taste making it a refreshing ale.
The ale is flavoured with coriander an orange peel. Based on the classic witbier, with coriander and orange peel, oats and Icelandic water. This is very good spicy white ale and is unfiltered. It has a lighter spiciness than the classic Belgian White Beer and is an interesting ale from our Northern European neighbour.
The brewery is 60 miles south of the Arctic circle. In the fishing port of Akureyri. The water comes from rain and glaciers from Hlidarfjall Mountain passing through lava fields. My 5*
This is a chestnut coloured ale with a strong malty aroma, with notes of the brewing aroma. It has a deep rich taste of malts and toffee, balanced with good hop notes and woody aftertaste. This is a good warming winter ale. 5*
Morland was originally brewed in Oxfordshire before being taken over by Green King. The beers are brewed under the Morland name by Greene King in Bury St Edmunds. This is a rich malty English Strong Ale variant of the famous Old Speckled Hen. It is a blended ale with a base ale using crystal malt to give the toffee taste and Challenger, First Gold and Goldings hops. It is blended with a 12% strong ale to give a beer in the style of Suffolk Old Ale.
This is a darker chestnut coloured ale, which comes with rich malty and toffee aromas. The taste is a good full bodied malty ale and is an excellent English bitter. My 5* rating. Surprisingly this ale is 3.8%, as I would have expected it to be around 4.5 or so.
Barnsley Bitter was traditionally locally brewed, and in the past was brewed by Courage, now long defunct. It is good to find such a good version of this traditional northern bitter ale, brewed in Barnsley, which was fortunately on tap at my local micro pub – Just Ales in Wells. Do look out for this ale.
This Mild ale was on offer from one of our local Breweries at the Burnham-on-Sea Food Festival. It is an excellent dark ale with a chocolate aroma. The taste is a mix of chocolate and vanilla notes and a sweet malt background, with a hint of hop sharpness. overall a satisfying taste. An excellent ale if you like the milder beers, that were historically common and more popular further north in the UK. It is nice to see a mild ale in the South West. My 5* rating
This ale is bright amber coloured with a pleasant toffee malt aroma, with aged oak wood notes. The taste is made up of sweet smooth, honey caramel toffee and vanilla notes, with an aftertaste of aged oak. A good strong ale, with an aroma reminiscent of sitting in an Elizabethan or Jacobean house surrounded by aged oak furniture.
A strong ale for all seasons but especially winter.
This was the first beer produced in 2003 from this Edingburgh based, Scottish brewery, produced by storing in oak whiskey casks to flavour before using for whisky. Well worth trying if you like strong ales.
This is a golden amber ale with a fresh off the bine hop aroma, with hints of vanilla. It is has a pleasant malt and orange warming taste with a fruit sharpness and a good hop bitter background, without overpowering bitterness.
Brewed with Cascade hops and also dry hoped with Cascade. This is a really good ale of a European style from the U.S. west coast San Francisco. My 5*
According to the brewery Liberty Ale® was first brewed to celebrate the bicentennial of Paul Revere’s historic ride (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem), he alerted the American forces of the British approach before the battles of Lexington and Concord .
It was the first modern American IPA brewed after prohibition and the first modern American single-hop and dry-hopped ale, which started the American Craft Beer brewing.
