Harper’s Brewing Co – Medusa Ruby Red Ale

This is a chestnut red coloured ale with a malty, fruity and toffee aroma. It has a good malty taste, with hints of plum fruits and a light hop bitter finish.

This is a good richer ale with pleasant taste and aroma.

This ale is sold under the Aldi own label ‘Harper’s Brewing Co’, brewed by Marston’s Brewery Burton-on-Trent.

Update: Now labelled Harper’s Ruby Ale and reportedly has had a recipe change.

  1. Hi! Medusa has been a favourite ale of mine for a while now. Went to Aldi to replenish stocks and they tell me it has been replaced by Harper’s Ruby Red Ale. This is marketed in somewhat plain purple and gold label with white writing. For me the artwork of the Medusa product was outstanding and again for me this feels a poorer if much simpler substitution. I can’t find anything on line to back up or contradict Aldi’s advice here.
The ale is supposedly the same so psychologically I may now be disadvantaged but to me it does appear similar but perhaps a bit more of a bitter taste. Any other thoughts from anyone?

    1. Thanks for the update on Medusa, it’s a shame the have changed the brew. It is probably down to what they perceive as market taste!
