A Dark Peaty Scotch Ale
This ale is a dark Ruby colour with burnt oak and pest aromas. It has a sweet taste running rapidly into a dry peat and smoke aged oak taste. It leads one to think of being in an old Tudor house, with the smell of the smoked wood beams and dark oak furniture.
This ale is a collaboration between the Williams Brothers Brewery in Scotland and the New York based Brooklyn Brewery. Made with pested malt, Scottish honey, Treacle and Brooklyn yeast.
This is a golden amber ale with a fresh off the bine hop aroma, with hints of vanilla. It is has a pleasant malt and orange warming taste with a fruit sharpness and a good hop bitter background, without overpowering bitterness.
Brewed with Cascade hops and also dry hoped with Cascade. This is a really good ale of a European style from the U.S. west coast San Francisco. My 5*
According to the brewery Liberty Ale® was first brewed to celebrate the bicentennial of Paul Revere’s historic ride (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem), he alerted the American forces of the British approach before the battles of Lexington and Concord .
It was the first modern American IPA brewed after prohibition and the first modern American single-hop and dry-hopped ale, which started the American Craft Beer brewing.
Half Moon Bay Brewery- Mavericks’ Beers and Ales – Pumpkin Harvest Ale 5.5%
This is an amber ale, with a cream head, with a malty aroma of spice ginger, pepper and cinnamon notes. It is a slightly sweet, strong barley wine type, warming tangy taste with a hop bitter follow-on and pumpkin notes. This would be a great autumn- winter warming ale. 5*
This ale is made with local Sugar Pie pumpkins, roasted with a secret blend of spices, then added to the brew kettle. The brewers taste notes say it has pumpkin pie spice flavour with biscuity malt notes.
The American Mavericks craft brewery, founded in 2000, is based in the surfing location of Half Moon Bay on the coast south of San Fransisco, famous for its Mavericks surfing location. It’s sister Half Moon Brewery is based in their brewery tap and restaurant.
I would be wary of going out on a surf board after a pint of this very pleasant ale, especially if the waves top out at 24 metres (80 feet) high.
A light amber coloured ale with rich fruit and grapefruit aromas, with hints of tropical fruit. It has a smooth, initially malt taste, followed by grapefruit bitterness from the American hops, with a hint of biscuit.
Whilst grapefruit can be a dominant flavour from American hops, it is not excessive in this ale and it has subtle fruit notes.
This is a special brew by The Brewing Crew of Balast Point in California brewed at the Hook Norton Brewery for the Wetherspoon chain.
This is a golden ale with a good strong aroma of malty hops with hints of pineapple and tropical fruit leading on to rich plum notes. It has a good warming taste of roasted light malts and fruit with a sweet beginning and middle leading to a crisp light hop bitter finish.
This is a great IPA, which is another of my top ales and well worth finding and sampling. 5*
